This Week in Celebrity Fashion: More No Than Yes

12 02 2012

Maybe it’s fashion fatigue but this week, red carpet faves made some very questionable choices.  Between promotional appearances, awards season and fashion week, they must be overwhelmed by appearances and are now reaching for their closet’s C team.

Michelle’s little girl pose matches what looks like a little girl’s nightgown.  All that’s missing is a Care Bear or a My Little Pony to complete the infantile design.

Uma has a bit of a bipolar fashion things going on.  Sometimes, she looks like her incredible self and sometimes, she looks like a droopy older version of herself.  No question as to which of those times this is.  It’s not just the voluminous, unflattering layers that trouble me or the coat trailing the carpet.  It’s as if Uma really doesn’t know what looks good on her.

Usually, Rachel=rave but this time, she’s so far off base I can’t find anything to like.  The weirdest thing is that she looks like a Real Housewife, from the bangs to the too pale dress.  One of her best qualities is that she has a bit of unforced quirkiness that comes out but here, it’s as if she’s trying to channel someone she’s not.

Simple can be good.  Sloppy simple is never good.  I think that this look doesn’t flatter Reese at all.  The bodice on a dress like this should be sexy but instead, it’s both unstructured and too low.  I also find the skirt too plain.  Taken together with the undone hair and no jewelry, it’s not a premiere worthy red carpet look.

My usual response to most SJP looks is seriously?  But this is the rare event when I’m going with seriously!  I’ve always liked the juxtaposition of elegance and toughness – a Chanel jacket with jeans, H&M mixed with Dior and a motorcycle jacket with a ballgown skirt.  It’s a kind of understated chic – like when Sharon stone wore a black Gap turtleneck with Valentino to the Oscars – that makes a bold statement.

When you’re wearing a great color, everything about your look brightens too.  I would love Viola’s dress if it were a neutral, with its sweet double ties but in this sassy color, it grabs your attention for all the right reasons.
